Summary of the 2008 Annual Meeting
|
The 2008 Annual Meeting of the SVM, held this year in Minneapolis, was the largest and most successful meeting our organization has ever held. Registrations and attendance, exhibitor numbers, and corporate participation all exceeded our most optimistic projections. Our ability to attract a flock this size is a clear reflection of the reputation for quality that continues to drive the growth of the SVM. This year's Scientific Program offered a careful balance of basic science, clinical medicine, and interventional topics designed to appeal to a wide range of interests. Highlights included "The Year in Review," in which the most exciting achievements in vascular medicine during the past year were reviewed; a novel session on "Improving Your Skills in Vascular Medicine," a high-level symposium on regulatory issues in vascular medicine; a series of lively debates; a keynote address provided by Dr. John R. Finnegan (dean of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health), and an outstanding young investigator session chaired by Dr. Judith Regensteiner. |
Dr. Robert Eberhardt showcased his clinical skills (and got the correct diagnosis!) at the clinical pathologic conference. A new feature this year was "What's Happening in Vascular Medicine" where representatives from five leading vascular institutions provided brief updates on hot topics being pursued at their respective programs. Mike Bacharach delivered his Presidential address, Alan Hirsch took us through "Cases Over Cocktails," and there was, of course, Vascular Jeopardy. (Who won? Let's just say that the city of Cleveland must be putting something in its water, and I plan to start drinking it.)
The Gala Event, held at Windows on Minnesota, was a delightful event despite some threatening weather that blew in from Sioux Falls.
The meeting logistics and accommodations were excellent, and once again confirmed the outstanding capabilities of our management company, The Sherwood Group, and our friends from TenDot Corporate Travel.
I look forward to planning next year's meetings and I am cautiously optimistic that it will be even better. This year's choices for location, topics and accommodations will once again reflect the interests and input of our membership. I look forward to seeing all of you next year.
Thom W. Rooke, MD
SVM President-Elect and Scientific Program Committee Chair
Master of the Society for Vascular Medicine
SVM president J. Michael Bacharach, MD, MPH, and past president John P. Cooke, MD, PhD, presented Master of the Society for Vascular Medicine Awards to Jeffrey W. Olin, DO, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and William R. Hiatt, MD, University of Colorado. The honorary title of "Master of the Society for Vascular Medicine" (MSVM) is conferred upon individuals who have provided extraordinary service to the Society. Jeffrey W. Olin, DO, is one of the foremost vascular experts in the country, most recently having served as chair of the Department of Vascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Dr. Olin received his medical degree in 1977 from the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship in 1978 at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and his residency in 1981 at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland. In addition, Dr. Olin completed a fellowship in hypertension and nephrology in 1983, also at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
A world-renowned expert in the field of vascular medicine, Dr. Olin has been the lead investigator in many clinical trials, including therapeutic angiogenesis (gene therapy). He is also an Associate Editor for the journal of Vascular Medicine. He edited and wrote one of the most respected books on vascular disease titled Peripheral Vascular Diseases and is the author of more than 130 scientific publications and book chapters.
William R. Hiatt, MD, is the Novartis Foundation endowed professor for cardiovascular research in the Department of Medicine, University of Colorado Denver, with appointments in cardiology and geriatrics. He is chief of the Section of Vascular Medicine and president of the Colorado Prevention Center, a university-affiliated cardiovascular and clinical trials research organization. Active in many national societies, Dr. Hiatt is a past-president of the Society for Vascular Medicine and is a fellow in both the American Heart Association and the American College of Physicians. He is the vice chair of the American Heart Association Atherosclerotic Peripheral Vascular Disease Interdisciplinary Working Group.
Dr. Hiatt also serves on the editorial board as an associate editor for the journal Vascular Medicine, the Cochrane Review Group on "Peripheral Vascular Disease," and he is guest editor for Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Hiatt is the current chair of the FDA Cardiovascular and Renal Advisory Committee (2003-08). His academic career has focused on the clinical, educational, and research aspects of patients with peripheral arterial disease resulting in more than 140 peer-reviewed publications. Support for this work has included a Kaiser Family Foundation Faculty Scholarship Award, the NIH Vascular Award in Vascular Disease, and current NIH and industry funding.
Interactive Case Study of the Month
Each month since the launch of our newly designed Web site in October 2007, SVM has featured an Interactive Case Study of the Month. The response to this new section has been universally positive. We are now encouraging you, our members, to submit proposals for case studies to be considered as a Case Study of the Month in the future.
The SVM Interactive Case Study consists of a series of interactive question-and-answer modules. Each module contains a brief introductory paragraph, a question about the best next step to take, and four possible (and plausible) answers to the question. Physicians often face the challenge of deciding between competing options with each having its own advantages and disadvantages. After the reader chooses one of the possible answers, the author provides the reader with a detailed one- to two-paragraph explanation for the best answer and a brief explanation of why the other options are incorrect or less preferred.
All proposals should be sent via e-mail to editor@vascularmed.org.
July 2008 SVM Web Site Case Study of the Month
Endovascular Fenestration of Type B Aortic Dissection
Presented by Yevgeniy Rits, MD and J. Michael Bacharach, MD, MPH, FSVM
A 49-year old man with history of untreated hypertension for 15 years developed acute onset of right lower extremity pain and weakness.
Call for Volunteers
As we move into the summer, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your participation and support of SVM. Moving forward, we would like to make sure that all the benefits of membership are accessible and that new opportunities are created and made available. SVM is convening a committee to ensure that all of us can take advantage of the services now available and create new opportunities for ways the society can help us in our vascular practice.
We are looking for 5 to 10 fellows, members or associates interested in getting involved with the project. We will have an organizational phone call later in the summer for those who express interest. The final product of this endeavor will be a brochure and plans to present to the Board of Trustees to move into the future. I hope you will consider participating. Contact SVM Headquarters at info@vascularmed.org with your interest and questions.
