Purpose:

The Villalta score is a clinical tool used to assess the severity of chronic venous disease (CVD) in the setting of Post Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS).  This tool helps in longitudinal care by quantifying signs and symptoms.

Instructions for Use:

  1. Evaluate each of the 10 clinical criteria listed below and assign a score ranging from 0 to 3 based on the severity of signs and symptoms.
  2. Sum up the scores for each criterion to obtain the total Villalta score for the patient.
  3. Use the total score to assess the severity of CVD and monitor changes over time.

Villalta Score Table:

Patient Example:

Pain:  1 (Mild)
Cramps:  2 (Moderate)
Heaviness:  3 (Severe)
Paresthesia:  0 (Absent)
Pruritus:  1 (Mild)
Swelling:  2 (Moderate)
Skin color changes:  1 (Mild)
Inflammation:  0 (Absent)
Induration or hardening of the skin: 0 (Absent)
Ulceration:  0 (Absent)
Total Villalta Score:                            10

Interpretation: Total Villalta Score of 10 indicates moderate severity of PTS.
